Medical Malpractice Insurance: California Physicians Have a Better Alternative in 2016
The Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP) provides a compelling alternative to traditional medical malpractice insurance. California doctors deserve more than just a bill from their provider of medical liability protection. With CAP, California physicians can expect:
- Valuable practice management support tools and resources
- Comprehensive risk management services for the doctors and their staff
- Auxiliary business and personal insurance products tailored specifically for physicians’ needs
- And much more!
In addition to our value added services, CAP offers an innovative pricing model that often results in substantially lower rates than traditional medical malpractice insurance. California is home to nearly 12,000 CAP members—Join us!
Medical Malpractice Insurance: California Physicians’ Better Alternative
Since 1977, CAP has offered medical professional liability protection through the Mutual Protection Trust (MPT), a superior alternative to traditional medical malpractice insurance. California physicians have relied on MPT to provide professional medical liability protection for nearly 40 years.
In that time, MPT has become one of the most financially stable coverage options available, with a consistent A+ (Superior) rating from A.M. Best Company since 2006. In 2014, MPT underwent another assessment with no overall rate increase for members. Our competitive rates for coverage make CAP membership a powerful choice for independent physicians in California.
CAP’s support for solo and small group physicians extends beyond medical malpractice coverage, however. We also work tirelessly to advocate on behalf of physicians’ best interests through lobbying and awareness campaigns. Combined with an ever-expanding array of practice management and risk management programs and benefits, there’s never been a better time to join CAP than 2015.
Here are some of the highlights of how CAP supported its members in 2014.
Defeating Proposition 46
In the fall, our members joined an unprecedented coalition of health care advocates across the state to help defeat Proposition 46 two-to-one in the polls. Under the proposed legislation, limits on non-economic damages from medical malpractice suits would have quadrupled, a move that would have funded higher courtroom payouts and lawyers’ fees at the expense of health care delivery.
CAP’s public affairs program played a significant role in the defeat of Proposition 46, teaming with “No on 46” to wage an extensive awareness campaign. We publicized
“No on 46” through:
- A letter campaign to CAP members and nonmember physicians in California
- Free informational brochures in English and Spanish for physicians to give their patients
- An extensive social media campaign
- A weekly email to CAP members educating them about MICRA
- Support to a statewide coalition that brought to voters the message that changing MICRA would harm patient care
Expanding Our Benefits, Services and Support Offerings
As CAP and its members worked to defeat Proposition 46 in 2014, we also focused on areas in which we could improve direct services to members.
Through our insurance agency, CAP Physicians Insurance Agency, Inc., CAP members can choose from an array of specialized ancillary insurance coverage, including:
- Workers’ compensation, business owner's policy, and employment practices products for medical practices
- Disability, term life, and personal umbrella insurance for physicians’ homes and families
- MedGuard and CyberRisk buy-ups to enhance benefits already provided through CAP membership
Our Practice Management Services Committee regularly meets to determine ways CAP can help make solo and group practice more financially and personally rewarding. Two early products of their sessions have been the Peer Recommended Business Directory and the CAPSource group-buying program:
- The expanding Peer Recommended Business Directory lets members learn about vendors recommended by other members for accounting, business law, billing, and other business needs.
- CAPSource offers group-purchasing efficiencies to small-group practices.
CAP is also expanding its reach to physicians’ offices through specially crafted webinars. In the past few months, we have brought top-tier speakers to help members learn how to:
- Implement effective physician-reimbursement techniques
- Protect their online reputation and maintain a positive web presence
Medical Malpractice Insurance: California Physicians’ Better Alternative
Through 2015 and beyond, CAP remains committed to surrounding our physicians with practice-related solutions while also maintaining MPT’s core strengths in superior claims defense and indemnity services.
As physicians experiment with different practice models – or simply fine-tune their existing operations – CAP will continue to evolve with them. Year by year, CAP continues to demonstrate that, when it comes to medical malpractice insurance, California physicians have a superior alternative with us.
